A shevah after a Shooruk (milupim) at the beginning of word
This may seem like a simple question but I took a poll and asked some people I know how they pronounce the word וּנְסַפֵּר. I personally say U-N-sa-per. Others said like me and others say Un-sa-per. I figured this must be a machlokes about whether a…

When did the gematria for 16 become ט"ז as oppose to י-ו?
I've been going through some records (e.g. from the old Jewish cemetery in Worms, Germany) from the 1200's and 1300's, and I've noticed that the gematria for 16 is yud-vav, as opposed to tes-zayin.
When and why was this switch incorporated and…

What are the rules for the Kaph getting a dagesh at the end of the word?
Specifically, in Naso 6:25, VeChuNeKah while in the previous pasuk none of them have the dagesh as if often the case. I presume it has something to do with the dagesh chazek in the nun. How does this compare to Bereishis 49:25 in the Birchos…

Why is the word "Kotveinu" not "Kotbeinu" with a dagesh?
כתבינו לחיים.
The tav has a (seemingly) short vowel to close the first vowel, which sefardim pronounce as the short "kot".
There is no meteg before the sh'va of the tav.
Why is the bet written without a dagesh kal?
Note: This is unrelated to the…

Can a meteg make a difference in meaning?
I have a book called ספר הקריאה השלם: חלק ג, פיתוחי חותם. I bought it from my shul and don't have any other chalakim or further information on it. It's not a kids' book, but it looks like one (pages about the size of Little Midrash but only about…

A nagging grammar/pronunciation/BIBLE issue/question:

Strange abbreviation זי"ע
Apparently this abbreviation is supposed to mean זכותו יגן עלינו. Surely this is grammatically incorrect, as the word זכות is feminine, and the phrase should be זכותו תגן עלינו?

Shva in היצור/היצורים
I have a similar question to Why is it a sheva na in ha-leviyim?
I have seen some siddurim indicate a shva nach in the yud of שֶׁכֵּן חובַת כָּל הַיְצוּרִים (shacharis of Shabbos, before yishtabach). And some a shva na.
Same thing for וְגַם כָּל…

Two Consecutive Segol's at End: When They Change To Kamatz & When Not
I used to think it was a hard fast rule that when a word ends in two consecutive segols such as: אֶרֶץ (or כסף) it will change the first Segol to a Kamatz as in אָרֶץ. However, it was pointed out to me in this past week's parasha that the word…

translation of vayikra
I believe the vav of vayikra is a vav hamehapeich, meaning it switches yikra from asid to avar. To that extent I heard that the correct translation would be He called, rather than "and He called" (unlike [chabad translation])1.
If so, why does…
