Non-orthodox organisations place immense significance on social responsibility calling it "Tikkun Olam". Orthodoxy less so...

Are there any relevant rabbinic teachings on the topic of social action (targeting extreme poverty in non-jewish circles in particular)?

Nowadays, besides giving charity to NGO's combatting extreme poverty in Africa, there are other ways of helping and contributing. Volunteering camps, educational trips and assisting and participating in social responsibility projects. The question is, are there any Halachic or Hashkafic ideas supporting or condemning this "Tikkun Olam" approach?

Does "logistical issues" include taking care of yourself first? If you don't support the Jewish community, no one will. If you don't donate to Africa, Bill Gates (eg.) will get around to it. – Double AA Jan 11 '18 at 02:19

"the concept of social responsibility been overlooked and even shunned by Orthodoxy" How do you know it has been? – Double AA Jan 11 '18 at 02:19

You should see R Aharon Lichtenstein's article "Jewish Philanthropy — Whither?" in Varieties – Double AA Jan 11 '18 at 02:21
  • The Rambam says no such thing. He says (in context) מְפַרְנְסִין וּמְכַסִּין עֲנִיֵּי עַכּוּ''ם עִם עֲנִיֵּי יִשְׂרָאֵל מִפְּנֵי דַּרְכֵי שָׁלוֹם that if a non-Jew comes along with the Jewish beggars then - for PC reasons (to use a 21th-century comparison) - one ALSO gives him.

  • why has the concept of social responsibility been overlooked and even shunned by Orthodoxy is a very brazen statement with no proof provided. Maybe they are too busy dealing with their internal poverty and issues and have no spare time and resources for everybody else. (Charity beings at home, as the Rambam 7:13 states עָנִי שֶׁהוּא קְרוֹבוֹ קֹדֶם לְכָל אָדָם. עֲנִיֵּי בֵּיתוֹ קוֹדְמִין לַעֲנִיֵּי עִירוֹ. עֲנִיֵּי עִירוֹ קוֹדְמִין לַעֲנִיֵּי עִיר אַחֶרֶת - same chapter you quoted, 6 Halachot further down.)

  • Who says that being a light upon the nations (if this well known idea exists at all - which you refer to later as "Tikkun Olam") means that you have to help them? Maybe it means you have to set a good example?
