Friday is not called erev shabbos; Friday evening is. In the same way that Monday evening is erev yom shlishi, Wednesday evening is erev yom chamishi, Sunday evening is erev yom rishon, etc. Since the day starts when the sun has descended and the stars have come out (rather than at midnight), the evening of Shabbos is Friday night. – Shimon bM Mar 09 '16 at 08:26

@ShimonbM IME Friday is called erev Shabas. See also the comments on http://judaism.stackexchange.com/q/47386. – msh210 Mar 09 '16 at 08:36

@ShimonbM And it is a mitzva to each all of Erev Yom Kippur, right from the morning. – Adám Mar 09 '16 at 12:32

You could add that the phrase "ohr l'yom..." (lit. light [that belongs] to day number...) means the night before the day in question. – Adám Mar 09 '16 at 12:33

Is Saturday really called Shabbat and not Yom HaShvi'i? I understand you can refer to the day by the holiday which happens to coincide with it every week, but is that the day's name? – Double AA Mar 09 '16 at 13:45

1@DoubleAA indeed the gemara RH 31a calls the day hashvii - although I can see how no one calls it this way in day to day language – mbloch Mar 09 '16 at 13:57
