All LEGO sets are categorised into themes, which have changed over the years.
Some of the most popular themes include:
- castle
- city, has taken on most of the sub-themes of the Town theme, including Police, Fire, as well as Trains and Space.
- Harry Potter, a theme based on the film franchise.
- Pirates, not to be confused with the Pirates of the Caribbean license.
- Space, the original Space theme was a sci-fi fan's LEGO dream with a number of sub-themes, aliens, monorails and spaceships. The current Space sub-theme is a more realistic theme with rockets, a Space Shuttle and satellites.
- star-wars, arguably the most popular theme ever since its release in 1999, in 2012 LEGO renewed the license for another 10 years.

- Town, Still going strong, although most of it's original sub-themes have moved into City.
- trains, now part of the City theme.
