Women’s History Internship Program
Our Women’s History Internship program offers ten-week paid internships that amplify women’s stories to tell a more complete American history, reach a diverse audience, and empower and inspire people from all walks of life.
The 2025 Women’s History Internship program will take place from June 9 to August 15, 2025 in Washington, DC. Weekly living stipends and housing will be provided. It is open to current U.S. college students or recent college graduates (within 15 months of June 2025) who are at least 18 years old. We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, nontraditional learners, and those in both 4-year and community college programs. Applicants must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Interns will have the opportunity to:
- Gain a deeper understanding of museum and educational outreach best practices
- Increase their knowledge of interdisciplinary women’s history
- Explore various career paths, networks, and leadership and mentorship experiences
- Develop professional skills for working in galleries, libraries, archives, and museums
We will host two interns for the following project:
We Do Declare Digital Curation and Oral History Internship
Come help us launch a flagship research and education project!
In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we're exploring how generations of diverse women have experienced a key concept in American history: independence. Through a multi-faceted oral history project focused on the last 50 years, public programming, educational resources, and subsequent online experience, We Do Declare: Women’s Voices on Independence will explore when, how, and why women have sought independence in their own lives specifically through the lens of economic power.
The two We Do Declare interns will join curators and digital strategists to help with research, writing, and developing digital products and experiences. Tasks may include background research and fact-checking, writing projects including blog posts, and digital and social media projects.
The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum team values collaboration, respect, courage, compassion, and innovation in our mission to create space for women's history on the National Mall in Washington, DC, deepen our nation's stories, and inspire conversation, connection, and change. To realize our vision of a more representative history, we are building a team that represents the diversity of our country. We look forward to welcoming interns from all genders, religious, ethnic and racial backgrounds, abilities, educational backgrounds, sexual orientations, and socioeconomic statuses.
Preferred qualifications: We seek curious, skillful researchers and creative thinkers. Must possess strong research, writing, communication, organization, and collaborative skillsets. Preference will be given to candidates with coursework in American and/or women’s history, experience with oral history methodology, and demonstrated interest in museums and/or digital experience design.
