The series is written from the perspective of Isabella "Bella" Swan, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, who moves to Forks, Washington to live with her biological father. While there, she meets and becomes interested in Edward Cullen, apparently the youngest of the adopted Cullen family, whose patriarch Carlisle is a doctor at the local hospital. Bella soon realizes that Edward, and the other Cullens, aren't like normal people; they don't eat, keep to themselves almost exclusively, stay home when it's sunny, and are capable of inhuman feats of strength. Edward's eyes change color, and he carries himself like someone who's seen much more of the world than a 17-year-old could. With some hints from a friend from the nearby Quileute reservation, Jacob Black, Bella puts the pieces together... The Cullens are a coven of vampires. Despite being self-styled "vegetarians", feeding only on the blood of animals, it's dangerous for Bella to be anywhere near Edward. However, it's too late. Bella and Edward have fallen madly in love with each other, and Bella wants Edward to turn her, so she can be with him forever.
Not everyone is a fan of this idea. Jacob's Quileute tribe hides a deadly supernatural secret of their own, and the only thing preventing a war between the Cullens and Quileutes is a treaty stipulating that the Cullens can never bite a human. The Volturi, an ancient vampire coven self-appointed to enforce vampire laws, are unhappy that the human Bella knows of the existence of vampires. And Victoria, whose mate James tempts fate by hunting Bella while the Cullens protect her, wants her revenge for his death.
