The Klingon language (tlhIngan Hol) is the language of the Klingons in the Star Trek universe. Its basic sound was created by James Doohan (“Scotty”) for Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and its grammar and a wider vocabulary were later created by Marc Okrand.

In Star Trek, the Klingon writing system is pIqaD, although the text seen on-screen is not actual Klingon text. Spoken Klingon in Star Trek follows the real grammar of the language.

Because a real grammar and vocabulary were created, it is possible to learn the Klingon language, although carrying on a conversation is difficult due to its small vocabulary of about 3000 words. Outside of Star Trek, the language is most often written in the Latin alphabet, although it is also possible to write using pIqaD.
