Questions tagged [futurama]

An animated science-fiction TV series [1999-2003, continued 2010-2013], showing the adventures of a 20th century man (Philip J. Fry) woken from a cryogenic sleep into a retro-futuristic 31st century, with strong absurdist leanings.

Futurama is set in New New York at the turn of the 31st century, in a time filled with technological wonders. The city of New New York has been built over the ruins of present-day New York City, referred to as "Old New York."

Various devices and architecture are similar to the Populuxe style. Global warming, inflexible bureaucracy, and substance abuse are a few of the subjects given a 31st-century exaggeration in a world where the problems have become both more extreme and more common. Just as New York has become a more extreme version of itself in the future, other Earth locations are given the same treatment.

Futurama logo, showing several characters holding weapons. Philip Fry is in the front. Immediately behind him are Bender and Leela, with Zoidberg and Professor Farnsworth in the back.

Why does Prof. Farnsworth run Planet Express?

The Professor is clearly a physicist and inventor. Is it ever shown why he is running a small scale shipping company with only a handful of employees, instead of (for example) working in a government lab or university research center?

How was the cryogenization of Fry not discovered sooner?

I can't find any logical explanation of the key point that makes all of the Futurama series run, at least in the episodes I've seen. I guess that at least Fry's family reported his disappearance to the police once he didn't return that night from…

How do they travel so fast in Futurama?

The speed in which they can travel in spaceships seems way higher than lightspeed, despite it being stated in one episode that their spaceship can only travel up to 99% of the speed of light. For example, in one episode they manage to get to the…

Why does Planet Express employ Dr. Zoidberg?

For the most part, the Planet Express crew seems to actively dislike Zoidberg, and Professor Farnsworth and Hermes aren't exactly warm fuzzy balls of sympathy and compassion. They have to be employing him for a specific purpose - Amy is there for…

Why is Zoidberg so poor?

Dr. Zoidberg is known to be very poor. He lives in a dumpster and eats garbage. But wouldn't he be paid similar amount to say, Fry, Bender, Leela, and Scruffy? Fry, Bender, Leela, and Scruffy all seem to do okay, albeit on the poorer side of the…

Why does Nibbler's poop only get super heavy after he has pooped it?

Nibbler appears to weigh a normal amount (seen when being picked up, etc.), but then takes a poop and his dark matter excrement is so dense that it has a colossal weight for its size. Where does all this extra weight come from??? Surely he should…

Shouldn't Leela's parents' mailbox say "Leela" instead of "Turanga"?

How did the writers not notice that the mailbox of Leela's parents says "Turanga," and not "Leela"? Turanga Leela is Leela's proper name, with Leela being her surname, so shouldn't it follow that her folks would be the same?

In the original airing of the pilot, was Nibbler's shadow drawn under the desk in the cryogenics lab?

Space Pilot 3000 was aired on TV the other night, and during the scene where Fry first falls off his chair, you can see Nibbler's shadow on the underside of the desk. This surprised me, as I never remembered seeing it on the original airing. I…

Why doesn't Fry return to his original time?

Though he's certainly built a life for himself in the future, Fry still has a life (though it's pretty lame) back in the year 2000. Why doesn't he go back in time and stay there? What's keeping him in future Earth?

What's the supposed pun behind the name I.C. Wiener?

I don't understand the supposed pun in the name "I.C. Wiener". The best explanation I’ve read is that “I.C.” is like “Icy”, referring to the cryogenically frozen people, but this looks too far fetched to be a real pun. Is there any official…

Leela, as a Cyclops, does not have Binocular vision, therefore she is incapable of depth perception through Stereopsis. Has this ever been mentioned as a weakness, or ever played against her?
