There's not a ton of evidence to support this, but the intro to the show seems to imply the world exists inside a sphere rather than on the outside of it:

This seems like the sort of hint GRRM would drop; additionally, this could be the source of the strange season cycles that the world experiences. It's at least plausible that the inhabitants of this world would never notice due to atmospheric effects. Also, I don't recall any references in the books to a ship appearing on the horizon (which would be a nail in the coffin for my theory).

Of course, perhaps the animators for the intro simply did not want to render a sky...

EDIT: forgot to include:

  • Ah, there's nothing new under the sun. I was missing the keyword "hollow." – Ryan Kennedy Jun 05 '16 at 18:03
  • I feel like this question would benefit more from the knowledge of a scientist, as to whether it is possible or not. I don't think it has an answer that the SE stack could give. Although I'm not convinced that the answer GRRM gave ("round") does not rule this out. – The Giant of Lannister Jun 05 '16 at 18:10
  • @TheGiantofLannister It’s only possible with magic. There would be no gravity inside the sphere, like one of the answers on the duplicate pointed out. But that’s not much of a problem in a fantasy world. – Molag Bal Jun 05 '16 at 18:55
  • The world is flat, the Queen is a lizard and Courtney killed Kurt..... – Seamusthedog May 22 '19 at 19:48
