It happens in movies all the time: the hero steals someone's bicycle because they had to save someone's life, or breaks the law in any number of ways to save someone's life.

My question is: is this relatively legal for a professional (like someone in the FBI or a firefighter) to do? And also: is it legal for a random private citizen to do (e.g. average Joe sees a murderer approaching his daughter with a knife, and steals a bike/gun in order to stop the murderer)?

And also: what if the supposed "hero" was wrong? E.g. the hero had every reason to believe there was a bomb threat, and so stole a vehicle to get to the crime scene, only to see that he'd been duped, and there was no bomb. Does the hero not being right have an impact on the consequences of his actions?

Lastly, if the hero's crimes are dealt with leniently, does that also extend to the hero saving non-human lives (e.g. breaking a car window because they saw a dog trapped in there).
