Chabad (a/k/a Lubavitch) is a branch of Hassidim was founded in the late 18th century by Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi. Chabad focuses heavily on Chassidus as an intellectual pursuit, and on outreach to nonobservant Jews, opening Chabad houses all over the world, both in large cities with lots of Jews, and in out-of-the-way places. They have many minhagim that are distinctive from other branches of chassidim, and from non-Chassidim in general.
