There seems to be a custom of not saying Mazel Tov on hearing news or observing that someone is pregnant (there are even those that correct others that say Mazel Tov). Instead they say Beshaah Tovah, that the pregnancy should conclude at the right time.

Someone asked Why do we say besha tova instead of mazal tov? which addresses the reason behind this custom. I'm looking for a source, or the first time it appears in literature.

  • Regarding the general issue of saying 'mazal tov', see http://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/48534/is-siman-tov-umazal-tov-a-halachically-problematic-phrase/74013#74013 and http://judaism.stackexchange.com/questions/790/why-do-we-say-mazel-tov-shouldnt-we-thank-hashem/74018?s=2|0.1882#74018. – mevaqesh Oct 19 '16 at 02:03
  • Perhaps the aforementioned problem is considered more accute in this case, for some reason. Or maybe the custom just developed; and some observers mistakenly "thought it was a thing". – mevaqesh Oct 19 '16 at 02:04
