Questions tagged [source-identification]

Questions about identifying a source of information. Not for seeking lists of items that meet a criteria; it is seeking individual known items based on clear descriptions.

Note that this is not for seeking unknown items that meet certain criteria (e.g. "Are there any hadith about [topic]?" would be a bad question), it must at least be known that the source in question refers to exactly one item. For example:

  • If you heard an imam quote a particular ayah, but you can't remember the exact wording
  • If an essay alludes to a hadith by description rather than with a direct quote
  • If a scholar quotes only a snippet of an older fatwa

If using this tag to identify a source, explain in as much detail as is reasonable what you know about the source in question. The more detail you provide, the better the chance of getting a good answer.

Examples for questions that would be tagged under here:

  • What is the source of this hadith regarding angels and the language of the Qur'an?

  • Is the Hadith that says that Allah was a hidden treasure and sought to be found an authentic hadith?
