Yantras: creation, significance and importance?

I've seen lot of Yantras till now, the famous being the Shri Yantra. What are these yantras? How are they made? and What they signify? I also heard that the Hinduism supports Pattern Energy, which is the basic foundation of Yantras. Is it true?
