Krishna (Sanskrit: कृष्ण, Kṛṣṇa) is the 8th incarnation of lord Vishnu.

Krishna was born to Devaki and her husband, Vasudeva. It was prophesied that the 8th son of Kansa's sister (Devaki) will kill Kansa. Thus, Kansa sent his sister Devaki and her husband (Vasudeva) to prison. Lord Vishnu himself later appears to Devaki and Vasudeva and tells them that he himself will be their 8th son and kill Kansa and destroy sin in the world.

In some sub-traditions, like Gaudiya-Vaishnavism, within the larger Vaishnavism, Krishna is worshipped as Svayam Bhagavan (the Supreme God) and it is sometimes known as Krishnaism .
