Question relating to sacrificing material in chess

The term sacrifice refers to one player voluntarily allowing the other to capture one or more pieces, either without material return or with less material return. A sacrifice is usually only played when it results in an attack on the opposing king or some significant positional advantage for the one who plays it. One classic source is Rudolf Spielmann's The Art of Sacrifice in Chess, and a more recent work focusing on the positional side of things is Neil McDonald's Positional Sacrifices.
