The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Self-Esteem: Using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Move Beyond Negative Self-Talk and Embrace Self-Compassion Paperback – 29 Oct. 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
We all have stories we've created about ourselves-some of them positive and some of them negative. If you suffer from low self-esteem, your story may include these types of narratives: "I'm a failure," "I'll never be able to do that," or "If only I were smarter or more attractive, I could be happy." Ironically, at the end of the day, these narratives are your biggest roadblocks to achieving happiness and living the life you deserve. So, how can you break free from these stories-once and for all?
Grounded in evidence-based acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), this workbook offers a step-by-step program to help you break free from self-doubt, learn to accept yourself and your faults, identify and cultivate your strengths, and reach your full potential. You'll also discover ways to take action and move toward the life you truly want, even when these actions trigger self-doubt. Finally, you'll learn to see yourself in all your complexity, with kindness and compassion.

Joe and Rich provide a perfect balance of confrontation, compassion, practical worksheets, audio exercises, and engaging examples to wake us up to the fact that human beings are amazing--and that includes YOU. This succinct, well-documented book is perhaps the best book in the mindfulness and acceptance workbook series; a definite must-read for humans seeking freedom and authenticity."
--Patti Robinson, PhD, international consultant and trainer, and coauthor of The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Depression--Patti Robinson, PhD
"The authors of this fabulous workbook have a story to tell, and if you listen to it and learn from it, it will change your life. In a remarkably practical, humble, and genuine way, the authors tell us a story about living with the joys and sorrows of wanting to belong, of wanting to fit in, of wanting to care about and be cared for by others. This workbook teaches you how to stand tall in the presence of these vital human pursuits, to accept your anxieties and self-doubts, and to act according to your personal values. Above all, this workbook will teach you that it is pointless to search for self-esteem and self-acceptance, because you already have it. It was given to you as a birthright. This book will teach you how to reclaim it! Highly recommended!"
--Kirk Strosahl, PhD, codeveloper of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and coauthor of The Mindfulness and Acceptance Workbook for Depression--Kirk Strosahl, PhD
"The solution to low self-esteem sits hidden in a place you'd never think to look. This book shows you where that place is, and how to use your greater freedom from self-criticism to take your life in a new direction. Gentle, witty, and wise--the book feels like a conversation with a helpful friend. If self-esteem is a struggle for you, do yourself a favor and read this book."
--Steven C. Hayes, PhD, Nevada Foundation Professor in the department of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno; and originator and codeveloper of ACT--Steven C. Hayes, PhD
"There is a world of wisdom packed into this accessible, elegant workbook. The authors pursue psychology's Holy Grail--self-esteem--and deliver it to the reader, step by step. Or rather, they draw upon empirical research, their considerable clinical experience, and even their own lives to show why efforts to obtain and hold onto a thing called 'self-esteem' don't work--offering instead a way to build a sense of self that is accepting, compassionate, and ultimately freeing. This is the sort of text that should be required reading for us all."
--Darrah Westrup, PhD, author of Advanced Acceptance and Commitment Therapy; and coauthor of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for the Treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Trauma-Related Problems, The Mindful Couple, and Learning ACT for Group Treatment--Darrah Westrup, PhD

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 March 2022Format: PaperbackEasy to read and full of practical examples and exercises. These helped me to understand myself better and feel more able to make choices and changes in my life with confidence. As a result I’ve felt more empowered and found that my self esteem and quality of life has improved.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 6 January 2021Format: PaperbackHave previously completed various ACT workshops over the past couple of years run by Joe & Richard Bennett - have really enjoyed their work and learning all about ACT through their online Webinars. So I decided to buy this work book to see what types of practical tools can be used within this ACT approach, specifically looking through the lens of developing self esteem. This book provides ample practical advice and plenty of exercises which can be used like a daily workbook diary. The book isn't bland or boring like plenty out there, plenty of illustrations and cartoons etc, so I felt it does keep levels of engagement high throughout - its an interesting and fun journey : reading and filling in!
Everything in this book is explained simply and the learning flows continuously throughout the book; a real sense of clarity on how we can develop and grow our self compassion in ur day to day lives.
As a sport psychologist practitioner, I would be very comfortable and confident to recommend this book to future clients who I feel would benefit from developing their general well-being. Also for those who seem to be lacking in self esteem, self worth and self belief in their lives, whether that is on or off the pitch. Its a great - no nonsense practical workbook that wouldn't really need any further assistance once that first page it turned.
Thank you How & Richard - Loved it. Highly Recommend!
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 8 December 2020Format: PaperbackAs an ACT therapist myself I found this book particularly helpful, both to myself (with my own struggles with the “critical self”) and also in the perspective of building on my own professional skills and making the sessions more experiential. It explains some very complex ideas in a way that is straight forward, without the unnecessary jargon and over-use of theoretical models and constructs. Yet, it makes use of some fantastic research evidence to reference the points made. It gives you the “Oh, of course!” moments all the time.
The regular references to the authors’ own struggles make for a genuine and honest read. Throughout the book, you feel like we are all in the same boat; there is no “us-them” standpoint whatsoever. In a world in which so many people offer you ready made advice on how to live a happy life, this is a very refreshing approach.
I also found the workbook format very useful. It is really encouraging you to reflect on your own stuff and guides you through the pages, building on the previously learnt concepts and strategies in a logical way. On a practical note, the pages are very good for pencil work!
Trying out some of the strategies and metaphors myself, I can really see the benefit. I will be using this book in my practice, recommending it to people I work with at all stages of therapy.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 5 October 2020Format: Kindle EditionSo many of us struggle with feeling bad about ourselves, being self-critical, just not feeling good enough. And those unpleasant thoughts and emotions lead us into acting in ways we don't want to: avoiding things, hiding away, giving up on things we'd like to do, not daring to pursue that job or that relationship that we really want..
This excellent book presents an understandable, non-patronising and actually practical guide to making sure those problems don't rule your life any more. It recognizes the struggles we face (helped by the authors frankly discussing their own ), pays tribute to the things we've all tried - unsuccessfully - to improve things, and presents a science-based but clearly-described alternative approach. Maybe it's not a question of persuading yourself that you're all the things your mind says you're not; maybe instead it's about learning self-acceptance, self-compassion and getting on with the changes you want rather than waiting for the self-criticism to somehow evaporate.
Oliver & Bennett write clearly, compassionately and with respect for the reader. They obviously know their science well enough not to let it confuse matters. There are lots of exercises, activities and downloadable resources to help make this a change in your life, not just an interesting read. They're aided in all this by brilliant and memorable illustrations which don't just decorate the pages, but clarify the point being made.
I found the book helpful myself, and will definitely recommend it anyone struggling with 'low self-esteem'.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 October 2020Format: Kindle EditionThis book is far and away the best I have read on the topic of self-esteem. The authors discuss their own experiences with a refreshing honesty. While easy to read, the tone is not at all patronising and does a great job of reminding you that you are not broken. A foundation of solid research and science helps explain the function of the ‘not good enough’ story we tell ourselves.
Before reading this book, I hadn’t realised that some of my everyday habits and routines were so closely linked to my self-esteem – but there they were – my avoidance tactics and tricks for an ‘easy life’ that only take me further from what really matters.
The book’s personal and conversational style helps put you at ease and makes you feel you are talking face-to-face with the authors. There are also amusing drawings of the self-esteem ‘monster’ to illustrate key points. The use of regular spaces for your answers helps with the flow of the book, and encourages the development of self-care, self-compassion and helpful acceptance strategy. More personally, since reading the book I have noticed changes in my ability to be kind to myself, particularly where I am being overly critical when the ‘overprotector’ story is playing out in my life.
I will definitely be recommending this book to friends and family who have struggled with their self-esteem.
