- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 29 January 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseA well written and comprehensive yet engaging book. The two authors bring different perspectives and styles. A must read and indeed, reread. Excellent!
The Buddhist and non-Buddhist elements of the book are very thought provoking and illuminating. Give this book a try as it is written by reputable and experienced mindfulness teachers, not authors who have adopted the latest fad which is unfortunately prevalent in popular culture, this is authentic and invaluable guidance.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 October 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI always get bogged down by self-help books and thought this would just be like any other one which is boring and doesn't appeal to me and my mental health needs. This book however is amazing in the way it explains why I feel what I feel in very simplistic terms and what I can actually do to change it. Amazing book and would recommend to anyone :)
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2014Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI use this book as my guide to meditation and to living. What I love about it is that it doesn't just focus on 'mindfulness' but combines that with 'compassion'. Without the latter, I would find mindfulness in meditating and in living to be too difficult. I also love the information on the brain, how it developed, and how it affects the way we behave. This is a great book, especially for anyone who suffers from anxiety and who wants to find peace and calm.

- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 July 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis is very rewarding reading about compassion and its value to us for better health. Motivation is a topic which runs through it too. Gilberts style is very positive and encouraging. The book is very detailed and certainly gives food for thought. The values of Buddhism are also drawn upon. Overall one of the best books on this sort of topic I have found.
- Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 2 September 2018Format: Audible AudiobooksVerified PurchaseThe first half deserves a million stars.
The second half has some routine mindfulness based exercises that is a bit of repeatition if you are into the subject but still nice.

Great book. It deepens in compassion through exercises and theory. It is a beautiful journey to dive into our existence and the opening of consciousness.

Amazon CustomerReviewed in the United States on 27 November 20145.0 out of 5 stars A really useful book
I teach meditation and I recommended to my study group that this would be an excellent text for us to further our study of compassion as one of the skills we use in a meditation practice, especially as it is linked to the second skill of mindfulness and uses many of the focus ( the third skill I teach) techniques as well. The introduction and first chapter sets up the background then the next chapters focus on our brain and how it evolved and what that means to those practicing these skills. I particularly like that compassion is considered not only the recognition and feeling of compassion but also the commitment to action.
Most of us have found the exercises and reflections useful, and sometimes dramatic in practice.
I can recommend this text to those who have not been practicing long as well as long time practitioners. It is an excellent amalgam of science, theory and practical components.
Patricia ByrneReviewed in the United States on 30 May 20155.0 out of 5 stars Compassion for the Reader First
The focus is compassion in this book and not just for other people. When you study Buddhism, you can sometimes feel you are lacking the character to actually succeed. He makes the point over and over that our reactions are perfectly normal given our evolution and our experiences. But then he goes on to explain how we can change for the better and happier. The meditations are most useful. A good book for the beginner or someone having doubts or needing a gentle pat on the back.
