Overcoming app now available via iTunes and the Google Play Store.

'A thoroughly enjoyable read, and [I] would recommend trainee therapists read it also, as it will increase your understanding of the treatment of low self-esteem.' BABCP Magazine

Low self-esteem can make life difficult in all sorts of ways. It can make you anxious and unhappy, tormented by doubts and self-critical thoughts. It can get in the way of feeling at ease with other people and stop you from leading the life you want to lead. It makes it hard to value and appreciate yourself in the same way you would another person you care about.

Melanie Fennell's acclaimed and bestselling self-help guide will help you to understand your low self-esteem and break out of the vicious circle of distress, unhelpful behaviour and self-destructive thinking. Using practical techniques from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), this book will help you learn the art of self-acceptance and so transform your sense of yourself for the better.

Specifically, you will learn:
How low self-esteem develops and what keeps it going
How to question your negative thoughts and the attitudes that underlie them
How to identify your strengths and good qualities for a more balanced, kindly view of yourself

Overcoming self-help guides use clinically proven techniques to treat long-standing and disabling conditions, both psychological and physical. Many guides in the Overcoming series are recommended under the Reading Well Books on Prescription scheme.

I was refered to this author by a therapist so I ordered this book right away.

I can say this is a very thorough and very indepth self improving book.

Especially for sufferers of low self esteem, the book has examples from other people, which gives you an insight to what lies in the mind of them and to give you a starting point to your own lifestyle, then you tackle your own 'rules for living' and your 'bottom line' and you will feel starstruck because you realise what you have been living by (your own rules) and your overall evaluation of yourself.

This isn't just a self help book, melanie really delves in deep and gets to grip with your issues and in the end you rewrite your own rules and create a new bottom line and i can say I feel a lot better and more 'content' within myself now I have 'new rules' and a new 'bottom line'.

You must get this book! You wont regret it.

This was recommended to me by a italk professional counselor, it's the one she uses. The book is professionally written and is designed to help u or anyone change your life for the better.

There is one caveat though.. it's not going to cure you, but it will help you understand why you have the intrusive thoughts and feelings and how to deal with them when they show up. My personal background: I have lived with anxiety, depression and ptsd for the past 29years, I have a diagnosis of Non epileptic attack disorder.
I have only just copped however.. thankfully I have now through my newish doctor n italk see I way ahead, why is my background important.. well, when I say that this book is helping then take it as read it is.
--You are more important than you think--
--You are worth more than you think you are--Trust me on this

Tried to get into this one, but just couldn't. Found it pretty hard to follow and not very engaging. Ended up putting it down unfinished. Not a book I'd recommend. Just wasn't for me.

Very useful in determining what is keeping your low self-esteem going, how to break these maintenance cycles, and activities to develop it. It covers a range of topics, using case studies to illustrate points, and is clear in explanation. This book has helped me to realise how much it has held me back in progressing with my social anxiety disorder, which I'd previously been struggling with for a longtime and still suffered with even after therapy. This book is changing my perception of myself, as well as my skills and abilities, and I am very grateful for it. Thank you Melanie and editors!

This book was recommended to me and it does everything it promises and more. Easy to work through, helpful exercises and packed full of useful information this is a must read for anyone with low self-esteem. You can work through it at your own pace and you will learn so much about yourself it is a journey of self-discovery in a book. I haven't got to the end yet as find it preferable to work through it a chapter at a time then reflect on what I have learnt, but there are also very useful hints and tips on how to get the best from this book. Would recommend buying it on Kindle if possible as you can highlight key parts and go back to them, which I have found maximises its impact.
